‘Cool’ Control

[picture of Titan devices]Moeller’s RMQ-Titan brings style to control

The arrival of Moeller Electric’s new range of RMQ-Titan control devices brings the very best in modern ergonomic design to the fingertips of today's machine builder – it’s pleasing to the eye and easy to handle.

Titan, which takes its name from the titanium-coloured front ring, is ergonomically designed with the actuator elements shaped to correspond with the curve of the fingertip and indicator lights that have specially developed lenses to ensure optimum brightness.

Titan is very competitively priced and provides a full and comprehensive range of control circuit devices including pushbuttons, selector switches and emergency-stop switches, with or without illumination; key-operated actuators and indicator lights.

Designed to be extremely rugged, Titan has a minimum IP66 protection rating, with most of the range rated to IP67, allowing for use in harsh industrial environments. It has been developed for use around the world and meets all the relevant international standards, such as IEC/EN 60 947, CSA, UL and Lloyd's Register of Shipping.

LEDs, the safe, reliable and economical lighting elements

Previously, control devices depended on fragile filament bulbs for illumination, now with the incorporation of LED technology, brighter enduring lighting is available. The replacement of filament bulbs with this latest LED technology at no additional cost reduces current consumption and heat dissipation. They are also completely vibration proof and function for 100,000 hours non-stop. This is equivalent to 11.5 years of continuous operation, and at the end of this period the LED elements still produce half their original output rather than failing outright as with conventional filament bulbs. Even ordering is simplified since the LED and socket come as one complete element and are available in two voltage ranges, 18–30V AC/DC and 85–264V AC covering all the normal applications. The LEDs are available in red, green, white and blue.

Application designed

Titan is very flexible, for example all stay-put pushbutton actuators can be converted to spring-return by simply moving a metal ring which is made visible from the side when the pushbutton is depressed halfway. This unique feature is extremely useful if an inching function is required during machine commissioning, but where the actuator is later required to be stay-put. Both selector switches and key-operated actuators can be easily converted between stay-put and spring-return functions with the use of coloured coding adapters which simply are pushed into the rear of the device. The key-operated actuators, which have been reduced in height compared to the previous design, can also have the key withdrawable position modified by using simple coding adapters. Thus ordering and storage is considerably reduced.

Titan also features great versatility giving designers a huge variety of mounting configurations. Fitting into the standard 22mm mounting hole, up to six contact elements can be snap-fitted in two layers behind the actuators. The actuator elements are now flatter in the new design thus allowing the overall mounting depth to be reduced. Three mounting forms are available as before: flush mounting, surface mounting and rear mounting. A telescopic clip is available for use in control panels to adjust varying panel depths. The new IVS adapter allows for direct mounting onto top-hat rail.

All emergency-stop pushbuttons in the RMQ-Titan range are tamper-proof in compliance with ISO 13 850/EN 418. In other words, the opening of the safety circuit will always cause the annunciation circuit to close and the actuator to stay-put. Rated to IP67/69K protection, three types are available: pull-to-release with or without illumination, and key-operated. I n the illuminated version an integral LED is permanently lit or lights up when actuated, according to requirements. This safety component is therefore easily visible even in darkened rooms, and saves having to fit a separate indicator light. All three can be fitted with a protective collar, which is aimed at those applications where the emergency-stop needs to be protected against accidental actuation. Critical warnings can be further reinforced by an audible alarm signal; the buzzers in the Titan range emit either a continuous or pulsed penetrating sound, which enables dangerous situations to be recognised and dealt with quickly.

All button plates, indicator lights and push-button legend plates in the RMQ-Titan range can be laser-inscribed with any texts or symbols the customer requires. Being burnt into the surface the inscription will remain permanently, in contrast to printed elements.

In order to meet the high standards of quality in production plants automated control and monitoring are important features. Using the Actuator Sensor Interface (AS-I) components from the field level can be connected to a higher-level control system via a single 2-wire cable. This provides a reduction in wiring and size of enclosures, elimination of control cable runs and splitter boxes. These all give the OEM and user benefits in project planning, commissioning, maintenance and future expansion. RMQ-Titan control circuit devices can be networked using AS-I, with adapters available for connecting both flush and surface mounting devices.
